Three people were stabbed in Times Square following a wild early-morning brawl Saturday between teenagers from Brooklyn and Newark, N.J., police said.
The victims, all from Newark, were in stable condition at Manhattan hospitals.
Police arrested 10 young men, including the three wounded, after the 1:40 a.m. melee near Broadway and 45th St.
The teens, ages 17 to 19, were charged with disorderly conduct, third-degree assault and gang assault. It was unknown what sparked the violence.
"We don't believe it's gang-related," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. "There was a confrontation. People from Brooklyn stabbed the people from Newark."
The bloody fight marked the second time in five months that a mini-riot broke out in Times Square.
In October, dozens of youngsters leaving a movie theater rumbled, and four young men were stabbed and slashed
so why do these things happen in the most busiest streets of new york..? can the cops do anything to prevent it ..??? i worry because the Times Square area is usually crowded with the visitors to the NYC and if this thing increases, will it be safe anymore for the visitors to hang out any day any time..???
Interesting and timely to me. Do we have to assume that every street is dangerous until proven safe? How sad is that? On Tuesday I was at Manhattan Center which is a school on East 115 and Pleasant (near the FDR drive) I got there about 2:50 PM and left somewhere between 3:30 - 3:40PM. I walked up 116th st. to first ave to get a taxi. Today I heard that there was a shooting on East 113th and Pleasant ave. It was in the park - right by the school. It was possibly gang related. I didn't see or hear anything - no sirens - nothing. I must have just missed it. I am usually cautious when walking ANYWHERE, but I will admit that I try to be more aware of my surroundings when I'm in certain parts of East Harlem. But, I did not feel any sense of danger. 2 blocks away was danger. Makes you wonder where we are safe.
ReplyDeleteAwareness. It's really the only thing that will truly protect you from harm. You've got to exercise common sense about your surroundings in every situation throughout all hours of the day.
ReplyDeleteI've felt safe riding the subway after 12 AM...and completely unsafe around 4 PM..it really doesn't matter what time of day it is. Violence is unexplainable.
true, but nyc has come a long way in reducing the frequency of violent crime. in, 1970's the city almost went bankrupt, crime was at an all time high, and nearly a million people fled to the suburbs (my husband and his family among them). the turn around in nyc has been attributed to the broken window theory -- addressing minor crimes, fixing broken windows, eliminating graffiti on subway cars, etc leads to a reduction in "citizen fear" and improved social controls, which, in turn, prevent more serious crimes from occurring. now, with the deepening recession, some fear, and statistics are beginning to show, the possible return of 70's era crime in the city -- perhaps the reasons are a result of a decrease in addressing "minor crimes" due to budgetary belt tightening and a relaxation on social controls and increased anxiety brought about by a return of "citizen fear".
ReplyDeletesorry, i know a little out there -- maybe too much reading about "perception" lately.
